Darn huge question, brother!
For me, as I see it it was an opportunity to wean his family from his personal presence lessening their dependence on him. More importantly, as I remember the instructions and counsel given by Immanuel before Michael left to become Jesus was that he was to meet as many people of the time every where, as many of his children to get to know what each of them were like in their different lives.
It was also to plant the seeds for the future missions of his messengers in bringing the gospel in those areas and beyond.
What he learned about mankind? Difficult to answer. Mankind means ALL of humanity...really too general. What do you think he learned? That everyone of his children was /is unique; some are truth-seekers, some not...etc etc etc...need to read. But he learned what you and I learn about people...everyone is different!
He learnt that he was soon to start his life work of becoming a spiritual teacher upon his return to his land.

Josephat, one of the most powerful experience Jesus had on this trip was the finding of and the personal training and instructions given to 32 religious teachers. Thirty of whom joined the new Christian Religion about Jesus. These very Christian teachers of these times actually prepared the modern day world for the reception and recognition of the 5th Epochal Revelation of God. In between these epochal periodic revelations revelatory evolution through auto-revelation (Human teachers of truth actually finding God's will and then attempting to do this divine will) Referenced in the revelation as an ACT of the Supreme Being or Divine Acting. We must not only just love we must also act. Jesus entire life was a new revelation of the Supreme Being.
99:5.11 What a mistake for Christians to make when, in presenting Christ as the supreme ideal of spiritual leadership, they dare to require God-conscious men and women to reject the historic leadership of the God-knowing men who have contributed to their particular national or racial illumination during past ages.
