5. The nature of God and our personal relationship with him

According to the teachings of the Fifth Epochal Revelation in The Urantia Book, the nature of God and our personal relationship with Him form the foundational revelation of the entire work, presented primarily in Papers 1–5 (especially Paper 1: "The Universal Father," Paper 2: "The Nature of God," Paper 3 "The Attributes of God", Paper 4 "God's Relation to the Universe" and Paper 5: "God's Relation to the Individual").

The Nature of God: The Universal Father

God is the Universal Father—the First Source and Center of all reality, the infinite, eternal, primal personality who is the origin of everything and everyone. He is not an abstract force, mechanical law, or distant power but a personal, loving Creator whose essence is best understood through the concept of divine fatherhood. His spirit actually indwells you.

• Infinite and Absolute Attributes — God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, eternal, infinite perfection, unchanging in divinity yet dynamically creative. He is the source of truth (in mind), beauty (in spirit), and goodness (in personality). His nature encompasses love, mercy, goodness, justice, and absolute free will.
• Personal and Loving — Above all, God is personality—the supreme personality who can "know and be known," "love and be loved." He is approachable as a true spiritual parent. The revelation emphasizes that the most illuminating portrayal of God's nature is found in the life and teachings of Jesus (Michael of Nebadon), who revealed the Father as forgiving, compassionate, and intimately concerned with each child.
• Transcendent yet Immanent — God transcends the universe (beyond all creation) while being immanent (present within it). He is the loving Father in personal relations, governed by divine sentiment rather than mere power or intellect. His love is intelligent, farseeing parental affection, unified with divine wisdom.

The mandate "Be you perfect, even as I am perfect" is an invitation from a loving Father to grow toward Godlikeness through free-will partnership.

Our Personal Relationship with God

The Urantia 5th Epochal Revelation teaches that the Universal Father establishes a direct, intimate, personal relationship with every normal-minded mortal through the indwelling Thought Adjuster—a prepersonal fragment of God Himself, a divine gift sent to live within the human mind.

• The Thought Adjuster as God's Presence — This "Mystery Monitor" or "divine fragment" is an actual part of the eternal Deity of the Paradise Father. It indwells the intellect of every morally conscious person, providing the assurance of divine fellowship. Man need not search afar to find God; inner experience of the soul's contemplation of this spiritual presence enables communion with Him.
• Guidance and Partnership — The Adjuster is not coercive; it respects human free will and personality sovereignty. It spiritualizes the mind, builds the immortal soul (joint creation with the human personality), and guides toward truth, beauty, goodness, and conformity to the Father's will. It brings a predetermined ideal plan for spiritual development but awaits voluntary cooperation. The Adjuster is the infallible cosmic compass, pointing the soul Godward, fostering the yearning to be like God and attain Paradise.
• The Path to Knowing God — True relationship develops through faith, worship, sincere desire to do the Father's will, and loving service. It begins with mind consciousness (idea of God), progresses to soul consciousness (ideal of God), and culminates in spirit consciousness (reality of God). Wholehearted spiritual motivation and consecration to divine will yield the sublime consciousness of knowing God and assurance of eternal survival.
• Eternal Goal — The Adjuster patiently awaits fusion—eternal oneness with the mortal personality—actualizing union with God. This is the supreme adventure: God embarking eternally with man. Yielding to its leadings ensures progressive attainment of divine sonship, personality survival, and eventual presence before the Paradise Father. The greatest evidence of God's goodness is this indwelling gift, the promise of eternal career.

In essence, the 5th Epochal Revelation Papers contained in the Urantia Book portray God as the loving Universal Father who desires personal fellowship with each child. Through the indwelling Thought Adjuster, He makes direct, individualized contact, offering guidance, love, and the pathway to perfection and eternal life. Our relationship is reciprocal: as we respond in faith, worship, and will-alignment, we experience God as real, present, and affectionately devoted—transforming finite mortals into ascending sons and daughters destined for Paradise oneness with Deity. This intimate father-child bond is the core of true religion and the highest human destiny.
