In Paper 109 of The Fifth Epochal Revelation, titled “Relation of Adjusters to Universe Creatures,” describes the interassociations between human personality and the indwelling divine monitors (Thought Adjusters, also called Mystery Monitors or Divine Monitors).

These prepersonal fragments of the Universal Father function progressively in roles that include thought changing and thought adjusting (with related developmental phases sometimes designated Thought Changers early on, Thought Adjusters later, and Thought Controllers still later in the mortal career, per related papers).

The core interassociation is mutual and experiential. Human personality expands and develops through evolutionary struggles, social life, and adaptive versatility. Concurrently, the indwelling Adjuster gains skill and experience by rehearsing the realities of the ascending (morontia and beyond) universe career within the evolving human mind. Human existence serves as a period of practice for the Adjuster, preparing it for greater future responsibilities, while the Adjuster partners equally with the human mind to foster the evolution of the immortal soul of survival capacity.

The Adjuster’s primary focus is not temporal or planetary affairs but the spiritual and eternal dimensions of the partnership.

Adjusters are classified by experience (virgin, advanced, supreme) and function (including self-acting). They acquire skill through any contact with material races, regardless of whether the human subject survives. The first major stage of Adjuster evolution occurs in fusion with a surviving mortal soul: humans evolve inward and upward from man toward God, while Adjusters evolve outward and downward from God toward man, yielding an eternal union that is both “son of man and son of God.” Self-acting Adjusters (typically advanced or supreme) demonstrate greater capacity for independent function in non-personal matters, intercommunication on work levels, temporary detachment for service, and participation in planetary spiritual administration, while still rarely leaving their human hosts.

On worlds like Urantia (series-three type), the relationship is a life-and-death betrothal with potential for everlasting fusion if the human survives. Adjuster work varies slightly by planetary type and brain structure (greater contact possible with three-brained mortals during life), but remains remarkably uniform overall.

Some Adjusters are loaned temporarily (liaison type); others are candidates for permanent fusion. Nothing of survival value is ever lost in the universe.

Regarding human personality specifically: Adjusters are prepersonal beings originating from the source of personality. Their presence qualitatively augments the manifestations of human personality—especially when the Adjuster has prior experience. They greatly facilitate higher forms of intelligent intercommunication among humans (exchange of concepts, ideas, and ideals, plus spiritual communion), which animals lack and which evolutionary humans do not fully experience until Adjusters are bestowed. The type and prior experience of an Adjuster significantly influence the potential for personality expression; many of Urantia’s great intellectual and spiritual leaders owed much of their impact to superior, experienced Adjusters. Adjusters also cooperate with other spiritual influences to humanize and transform descendants of primitive peoples and serve as a key potential for advancing civilization—if withdrawn, society would tend to regress. Experienced Adjusters can contribute to planetary “cross-fertilization” of truth, beauty, and goodness values by carrying forward surviving meanings from prior nonsurviving hosts.

In their thought-related activities, supreme and self-acting Adjusters can contribute spiritual factors when the human mind flows freely in controlled creative imagination (or sometimes during sleep). They may arrest and divert mental currents to effect deep spiritual transformations in the superconsciousness, better aligning mind forces and energies with spiritual levels of present and future contact. The divine voice of wisdom, truth, goodness, and beauty within can sometimes be partially perceived. However, human unsteady attitudes, preconceived opinions, prejudices, and ancestral tendencies often interfere with or retard this work.

The central life problem is adjusting ancestral living tendencies to the spiritual urges of the Monitor. Heredity may slow personality conquest but does not prevent it. Cooperation with the Adjuster enables evolution of the immortal morontia soul and eventual presentation of the fused being higher in the universe.

True values persist: Adjusters never fail. Every meaningful value and survival-worthy experience in a will creature is conserved, irrespective of the personality’s survival. On nonsurvival, the Adjuster carries away the evolved survival values for bestowal on other minds or worlds. Personalized Adjusters (those who attain personality through service) become sovereign stabilizers, compensators, and executives who combine creator and creature (existential and experiential) experience and embrace all known relationships of personality.

In summary, the interassociation is a reciprocal partnership of growth: the human personality provides the experiential arena and evolving soul-potential in which the prepersonal divine monitor rehearses, adjusts, changes, spiritualizes, and conserves thought-values and meanings toward eternal fusion and higher universe service. The Adjuster’s activities elevate qualitative personality expression, facilitate higher communication and civilization, and guide mind toward spiritual alignment, while the human response (or lack thereof) shapes the Adjuster’s experiential development—all within a system where no true value is ultimately lost.
