Answer:  If God is perfect and all-loving, why does He allow imperfect beings to grow through struggles and suffering?

According to the Urantia Book (the 5th Epochal Revelation), God—the Universal Father—is perfect, infinite, all-wise, and all-loving. He does not will, cause, or personally inflict suffering on His children. Suffering and struggle arise from the nature of an evolutionary, imperfect universe where free-will creatures grow experientially toward perfection.

God Does Not Afflict His Children

Jesus teaches clearly in the Urantia Book:

“The Father in heaven does not willingly afflict the children of men. Man suffers, first, from the accidents of time and the imperfections of the evil of an immature physical existence. Next, he suffers the inexorable consequences of sin—the transgression of the laws of life and light. And finally, man reaps the harvest of his own iniquitous persistence in rebellion against the righteous rule of heaven on earth. But man’s miseries are not a personal visitation of divine judgment.” (148:6.11)

God never visits tribulation as arbitrary punishment. The Father is not responsible for every affliction that results from natural laws, creature choices, or the incompleteness of evolutionary creation. Intelligent effort and alignment with divine will can overcome much earthly misery.

        Why Imperfection and Struggle Exist

The universes of time and space are evolutionary and experiential, not static or instantly perfect like Havona (the central universe of perfection). Nature itself reflects this:

“Nature is the perfection of Paradise divided by the incompletion, evil, and sin of the unfinished universes.” (Paper 4)

        Imperfections stem from:

        • The unfinished, progressive nature of creation.
        • Creature free-will choices, mistakes, and (in some cases) rebellion.
        • Accidents of time and the inherent limitations of material existence.

The Universal Father could, in theory, create a perfect paradise instantly, but such a world would not foster the development of strong, noble, experienced characters. As one Urantia teaching states, the Creators have the power to make Urantia a veritable paradise, “but such an Eden would not contribute to the development of those strong, noble, and experienced characters which the Gods are so surely forging out on your world between the anvils of necessity and the hammers of anguish.

”The watchword of the universe is progress through evolutionary growth. Providence operates as the interlocking activities of celestial beings working for spiritual advancement according to cosmic law—not as childish or arbitrary intervention.

The Purpose of Struggle: Experiential Growth and Character

Imperfect beings grow through experience. The divine command “Be you perfect, even as I am perfect” (echoed from Jesus and throughout the revelation) requires an adventurous ascent involving real choices, challenges, and consequences. This builds:

        • Character virtues that could not develop in a risk-free environment (courage requires hardships; faith requires uncertainty; loyalty requires possibilities of betrayal, etc.).
        • Wisdom, insight, and spiritual maturity through trials.

The story of Job illustrates this: Job’s friends wrongly assumed suffering was always punishment for sin. Through his ordeal, Job gained a transforming vision of God, moral understanding, and spiritual insight—leading to soul peace that surpasses human understanding. Even misunderstood suffering can elevate one to higher levels of faith and comprehension.

The indwelling Thought Adjuster (a fragment of the Father) shares in every personality struggle but does not remove material hardships; instead, it provides spiritual guidance, comfort, and the capacity to find meaning and grow through them. The Father Himself participates in the struggles of every imperfect soul seeking ascent.

        Free Will and Real Consequences

Free will is sacred. A universe without real consequences for choices would undermine genuine love, responsibility, moral growth, and experiential wisdom. Suffering often results from the misuse of free will (sin and iniquity) or the inherent risks of an evolving material realm, but God’s love ensures that all things work together for good to those who love Him and seek His will.

The Supreme Being and Cosmic Context

On a grander scale, the Supreme Being (the evolving, experiential Deity of time and space) grows through the collective experiences—triumphs, struggles, and choices—of all finite creatures and creators. Incompleteness in the finite realms allows for this growth; the Supreme synthesizes creature experience into higher levels of reality. Our struggles and growth contribute to this divine process.

        Summary of the Urantia Perspective

God’s perfect love does not mean shielding imperfect beings from all difficulty. Instead, it provides the framework for an evolutionary universe where free-will creatures can attain perfection through experience, build eternal character, gain wisdom, and participate in the larger cosmic adventure. Suffering is real and often painful, but it is temporary in the eternal scheme. Faith, submission to the Father’s will, and partnership with the indwelling Spirit transform it into opportunities for growth.

The revelation emphasizes hope: “All things work together for good to those who love God.” The ultimate destiny is Paradise perfection, fusion with the Adjuster, and eternal service—where the lessons of time and space bear everlasting fruit.

These teachings present a coherent, optimistic view: God’s love is expressed not by eliminating all struggle, but by ensuring that every experience can serve the eternal purpose of perfecting His children.
