A 8. Who is God according to the 5th Epochal Revelation Urantia Papers?

Who is God according to the 5th Epochal Revelation Urantia Papers?

According to The Fifth Epochal Revelation (The Urantia Book, or Urantia Papers), God is primarily revealed as the Universal Father—the personal, loving First Source and Center of all things and beings. He is the God of all creation, the eternal originator, controller, and upholder of the universe of universes.

        Core Identity of God

        • The Universal Father: This is the highest and most approachable human concept of Deity. Of all possible titles, the revelation instructs us to portray the God of all creation as the Universal Father. He is not a distant or abstract force but a real personality who relates to every creature as a loving parent to his children. The "face which the Infinite turns toward all universe personalities is the face of a Father, the Universal Father of love."
        • First Source and Center: God is the primal reality—the infinite, eternal, and absolute origin of all reality (spirit, mind, matter, personality, and energy). Everything that exists derives from him in some way, yet he remains distinct and transcendent. Think of God first as a creator, then as a controller, and finally as an infinite upholder.
        • Infinite Spirit Personality: “God is spirit.” He is a universal spiritual presence—an infinite spiritual reality, the sovereign, eternal, immortal, invisible, and only true God. He is neither manlike nor machinelike. God is universal spirit, eternal truth, infinite reality, and father personality. He is the acme (highest expression) of divine personality and the origin and destiny of all personality throughout creation.

        Key Attributes and Nature

        • Personal and Relational: God is an infinite personality—eternal, true, good, and beautiful. He exercises sovereign will, experiences self-consciousness of divinity, and manifests a Father’s love and affection for his universe children. He is approachable; the infinite love of God draws all creatures toward him.
        • Infinite yet Self-Limiting: God is unlimited in power, divine in nature, final in will, infinite in attributes, eternal in wisdom, and absolute in reality. However, his power and presence are conditioned by his own nature (especially infinite love, truth, beauty, and goodness), his will (mercy and fatherly relationship), and the righteousness of the Paradise Trinity. He willingly limits himself to allow for creature freedom, growth, and evolutionary experience.
        • Omnipresent in Influence, Personal in Presence: God is everywhere present in spirit and through various agencies, yet his full personal presence is on Paradise (the eternal Isle at the center of all things). He rules the circle of eternity and reveals himself progressively to his creatures according to their capacity.
        • The Supreme Mandate: From the Universal Father comes the eternal exhortation: “Be you perfect, even as I am perfect.” This is the first duty and highest ambition of all creature creation—the goal of the long ascension career from material worlds to Paradise.

God in Relation to the Trinity and Other Deity Expressions

The Universal Father is one of the three existential Persons of the Paradise Trinity (along with the Eternal Son and the Infinite Spirit), which functions as unified Deity. The Trinity is the absolute center of all things, but the Father is the personal head and initiator.

        • God functions on multiple levels: as the existential Universal Father, through the evolving God the Supreme (the experiential Deity of time and space, to whom creatures contribute through their growth), and in other Deity expressions (Ultimate, Absolute).
        • A local Creator Son (such as Michael of Nebadon, who incarnated as Jesus on Urantia) is, to all practical intents and purposes, God to the beings of his local universe—the highest personification of the Father that creatures can know directly.

        How God Relates to Mortals

The Universal Father has bridged the gulf between infinity and finitude by sending a prepersonal fragment of himself—the Thought Adjuster (Mystery Monitor)—to indwell the mind of every normal-minded human. This is the most intimate way God relates to us: he lives within us, seeking to guide us toward spiritual growth and eventual fusion, without ever coercing our free will.

Jesus (Michael) revealed the Father’s true nature through his life on Urantia, showing God as a loving, merciful, and understanding parent rather than a stern judge or wrathful deity.

        Primary Sources in the Papers

The foundational teachings appear in the early papers:

In summary, according to the Urantia Papers, God is the infinite, eternal, personal Universal Father—the loving First Source and Center who creates, sustains, and draws all his children toward perfection and eternal fellowship with him. He is far more than any single human concept can fully capture, yet the Father idea remains the highest and most truthful approximation available to mortals. This revelation presents God as both transcendently majestic and intimately personal, inviting every individual into a living sonship relationship through faith, worship, and the daily choice to do his will.
