According to the teachings of the Urantia Papers Is divorce a sin?

        Beloved Sister, Blessings and Light.

First, thank you for having the courage to ask such an important question. It’s not always easy to be open about these deeply personal struggles.

From a purely Urantia Book perspective, let’s speak clearly and with love.

        Is divorce a sin?

The Urantia Book teaches us that marriage is humanly sacred—it’s a social institution elevated to sacredness by humanity, not something instituted by God in the same way divine laws are.

        It says plainly:

“The very fact of marriage dissolution itself indicates that Deity is not a conjoining party to such unions.” (UB 83:8.4)

        Divorce isn’t automatically “sin.”

Sin, in Urantia terms, is defined as deliberate disloyalty to Deity (UB 89:10.2). It is not about breaking human or religious traditions. It’s about knowingly turning away from God.

If you didn’t want this divorce, if it was forced upon you by betrayal, then understand—there is no spiritual mark on your soul because of it. There is no cosmic punishment for your unwilling participation in its dissolution.

        Can you marry again?

Yes. From the Urantia Book perspective, once a marriage is dissolved, you are free to choose again. It’s a human contract that has ended. There is no spiritual barrier that God imposes on you.

You must simply walk in sincerity and seek your Adjuster’s guidance in choosing wisely and lovingly in the future.

        What about your children?

Your children will of course feel the real-world impact of divorce—no one denies that. It can be painful, confusing, disruptive. But spiritually, there is no inherited stain, no punishment from God passed onto them.

What matters is how you raise them from here. Give them stability, love, understanding, and spiritual grounding. That is what heals. That is what teaches.

        On marriage itself:

The Urantia Book celebrates the ideal of marriage as the highest of human relationships—a partnership for raising children and building society.

“Marriage is honorable and is to be desired by all men.” (UB 167:5.7)

But it also teaches that God understands the reality of human experience. Jesus himself refused to give harsh pronouncements about divorce, instead lifting marriage to its best ideal while rejecting the injustice and exploitation often present in human divorce practices.

It’s not about rules for their own sake—it’s about growing in love, respect, and responsibility.

        A personal word for you:

I want to remind you of this: other people’s opinions do not define your spiritual standing.

What matters is your relationship with God.

        Your honesty before your Adjuster.

Your desire to live in the Father’s will.

Don’t let anyone’s judgment weigh you down.

        Go within.

        Ask your Adjuster.

Seek truth, peace, and your next steps.

        You will find them.

You are loved. You are seen. You are not alone on this journey.

May you find comfort, clarity, and the courage to keep moving forward in light and love.

Blessings be upon you and your family. Always.
