1. Spiritual growth and self improvement: Revision

1. Spiritual growth and self improvement

According to the teachings found in the 5th Epochal Revelation Papers in the Urantia Book here is a summary of the teachings on (Spiritual growth and self improvement)

According to the teachings of the Urantia Book (the Fifth Epochal Revelation), spiritual growth and self-improvement are inseparable aspects of the same divine process: the progressive evolution of an immortal morontia soul through intimate partnership with the indwelling Thought Adjuster (a fragment of God the Father). This is not a self-centered quest for personal perfection in the material sense, but a Godward, experiential transformation of the entire personality—mind, soul, and character—toward ever-greater Godlikeness, cosmic citizenship, and eternal service. The goal is fusion with the Adjuster, survival of personality, and ultimate attainment of Paradise perfection.

The Central Mechanism: The Thought Adjuster and the Evolving Soul

Every normal-minded human is indwelt by a Thought Adjuster, a prepersonal divine spirit whose mission is to spiritualize the mind, build spiritual counterparts of your experiences, and co-create with you an immortal soul. The soul is the joint creation of your material mind (the “soil”) and the Adjuster (the “pilot”), emerging as a new, morontia reality that survives physical death. As Paper 111 explains:

“Mind is the human soil from which the spirit Monitor must evolve the morontia soul with the co-operation of the indwelt personality.” The mortal career is “not so much a probation as an education.” Growth occurs in the “mind arena of choice,” where you actively, positively, and cooperatively choose to follow the Adjuster’s leadings rather than the impulses of the natural mind. Inner creativity—expressed through moral decisions, worship, and loving service—ennobles character and unifies the personality. Selfhood unification is the key: “The past is unchangeable; only the future can be changed by the ministry of the present creativity of the inner self.”

The Adjuster never coerces; it respects personality sovereignty. Success depends on your decisions, determinations, steadfast faith, and supreme desire “to be Godlike.” Paper 110 states: “The secret of survival is wrapped up in the supreme human desire to be Godlike and in the associated willingness to do and be any and all things which are essential to the final attainment of that overmastering desire.” You cooperate by:

  • Choosing to respond to divine leading.
  • Loving God and desiring to be like Him.
  • Loving and serving your fellows.
  • Joyfully accepting cosmic citizenship.

Progress is measured by traversal of the seven psychic circles (levels of personality status, mind attainment, soul growth, and Adjuster attunement). The entire personality—material, intellectual, and spiritual—must function harmoniously; partial growth is insufficient.

How Spiritual Growth Actually Occurs

(Paper 100 – “Religion in Human Experience”)Spiritual growth is unconscious, like love or physical development—you cannot force it, but you can provide favorable conditions. It begins with:

  1. An awakening to spiritual needs and recognition of spiritual poverty.
  2. Discernment of cosmic meanings.
  3. Discovery and elevation of supreme values.

Key quote: “Spiritual development depends, first, on the maintenance of a living spiritual connection with true spiritual forces and, second, on the continuous bearing of spiritual fruit: yielding the ministry to one’s fellows of that which has been received from one’s spiritual benefactors.”

Practical drivers include:

  • Wholehearted devotion to supreme values (truth, beauty, goodness).
  • Cultivated habits: sensitivity to divine values, reflective meditation, worshipful problem-solving, sharing spiritual life, refusal of selfishness.
  • Loyal living in the present moment.
  • Intimate association with other religionists (love supplies the soil).
  • Conflict that leads to choosing higher values and better reaction patterns.
  • Elimination of selfish qualities of love; unification of personality through love’s dominance.

Evidence of genuine growth: a personality “motivated by love, activated by unselfish ministry, and dominated by the wholehearted worship of the perfection ideals of divinity.” Spirituality becomes “the indicator of one’s nearness to God and the measure of one’s usefulness to fellow beings.” After attainment (gradual or by crisis), personality reorients around new, eternal values; temporal setbacks lose their power to destroy inner peace.

The Role of Religion, Faith, and Progressive Experience (Paper 101)Religion is the personal faith-response to the Adjuster’s inner urge—“a hunger and thirst for righteousness, a certain craving for divine perfection.” Faith is not mere belief; it motivates life, liberates from self, and assures survival. It progresses through phases: evolutionary (duty and conscience), revealed (truth and living experience), and morontia (survival, spirit perfection, ethical service, and expanding consciousness of Deity).Salvation is deliverance from incompleteness—of self, time, and the finite—through progressive attainment of spirit levels, cosmic coordination, and oneness with Deity. True religion coordinates knowledge, wisdom, faith, truth, and love, yielding temporal tranquility, moral enlightenment, God-consciousness, and “the positive assurance of personal survival.” It produces fruits in ethical sensitivity and loving service, not passive waiting for death to bestow virtues.

Self-Improvement in This Framework

Self-improvement is real but always subordinate to spiritualization. The goal of human self-realization “should be spiritual, not material.” Physical pleasures, human affections, and temporal institutions have their place, but “the only realities worth striving for are divine, spiritual, and eternal.” Mere intellectual or material advancement (e.g., vocabulary growth or career success) does not equal character development. Real growth shows in enhanced ideals, increased loyalty to supreme values, and personality unification.

The ideal life is one of “loving service” rather than self-torture or mock piety. A lighthearted, joyous earthly career is fully compatible with consecrated eternal aims. You ennoble character through inner creativity and daily moral choices; the Adjuster transforms trifles of living into eternal value when you cooperate.

The Ultimate Goal and Assurance

Spiritual growth yields lasting joy, peace “which passes all understanding,” and the certain consciousness that “what you begin in time you will assuredly finish in eternity—if it is worth finishing.” The Adjuster never fails; only conscious resistance prevents soul survival. When fusion occurs (on the mansion worlds or later), the mortal and divine become one inseparable being destined for Paradise and finaliter service.

In summary, the 5th Epochal Revelation Papers teach us that spiritual growth and authentic self-improvement are the same adventure: day-by-day, decision-by-decision cooperation with the divine presence within, expressed through faith, love, worship, and unselfish service. It transforms the “mediocre individual into a personality of idealistic power,” liberates you from material fetters, and launches you on an endless ascent toward God the Father. The technique is simple yet profound—live loyally today as a child of God, and eternal tomorrow will unfold. This is the pathway to becoming what the Adjuster already is: perfect in divinity and eternal in purpose.
