I spoke with Harvard's Dr. Steven Pinker about the immense improvements in human living conditions that are now happening with amazing speed almost everywhere in the world -- as detailed in his new book, Enlightenment Now! Dr. Pinker grew up in Montreal and earned his BA from McGill and his PhD from Harvard. Currently Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard, he has also taught at Stanford and MIT. He has won numerous prizes for his research, his teaching, and his nine books, including:

In confusion over man's origin, do not lose sight of his eternal destiny. Forget not that Jesus loved even little children, and that he forever made clear the great worth of human personality.

As you view the world, remember that the black patches of evil which you see are shown against a white background of ultimate good. You do not view merely white patches of good which show up miserably against a black background of evil.

 When there is so much good truth to publish and proclaim, why should men dwell so much upon the evil in the world just because it appears to be a fact? The beauties of the spiritual values of truth are more pleasurable and uplifting than is the phenomenon of evil. 

Whenever you think you are alone and that no-one is with you, you need to realize that there is ALWAYS someone watching over you. For Jadyn this was her great grandmother who had sadly passed away in the last year. Although the two of them had only met a few times it was instantly obvious that there was a connection that would last forever. Whenever Jadyn feels scared or unhappy she knows that GG is always there with her to guide he through the hardest times. It is important that we know that each of us had a Guardian Angel that does their very best to keep us safe during the hard times and helps us to learn how to make it through. Just as with Jadyns song "Don't Judge A Book by Its Cover" we need to believe that we are bigger than our challenges and that we are strong enough to make it through. "Guardian Angel" is a follow up to "Don't Judge" and we hope it lets people know that they are never alone through the struggles.

Using your special gifts to help others can be a gift to yourself as you enjoy a self esteem boost for making others' lives better, and make the world a better place. You feel more worthy of good deeds yourself, your trust in the decency of people is reinforced, and you feel more connected to yourself and to others.

The challenge is to produce an introductory film that transforms a great deal of historical and technical information into a compelling and engaging narrative. The solution chosen is to construct the film around the spiritual experience of a number of individuals whose lives have been impacted by the bestowal and who, in turn, have influenced the continuing unfolding of those repercussions.  read more

There are ten steps, or stages, to the evolution of a practical and efficient form of representative government, and these are:

1. Freedom of the person. Slavery, serfdom, and all forms of human bondage must disappear. 

 2. Freedom of the mind. Unless a free people are educated -- taught to think intelligently and plan wisely -- freedom usually does more harm than good. 

 3. The reign of law. Liberty can be enjoyed only when the will and whims of human rulers are replaced by legislative enactments in accordance with accepted fundamental law. 

4. Freedom of speech. Representative government is unthinkable without freedom of all forms of expression for human aspirations and opinions. 

5. Security of property. No government can long endure if it fails to provide for the right to enjoy personal property in some form. Man craves the right to use, control, bestow, sell, lease, and bequeath his personal property. 

6. The right of petition. Representative government assumes the right of citizens to be heard. The privilege of petition is inherent in free citizenship. 

7. The right to rule. It is not enough to be heard; the power of petition must progress to the actual management of the government. 

8. Universal suffrage. Representative government presupposes an intelligent, efficient, and universal electorate. The character of such a government will ever be determined by the character and caliber of those who compose it. As civilization progresses, suffrage, while remaining universal for both sexes, will be effectively modified, regrouped, and otherwise differentiated. 

9. Control of public servants. No civil government will be serviceable and effective unless the citizenry possess and use wise techniques of guiding and controlling officeholders and public servants. 

10. Intelligent and trained representation. The survival of democracy is dependent on successful representative government; and that is conditioned upon the practice of electing to public offices only those individuals who are technically trained, intellectually competent, socially loyal, and morally fit. Only by such provisions can government of the people, by the people, and for the people be preserved.
