“You must plant the rain before you plant a seed or tree!” proclaimed rain farmer Mr. Zephaniah Phiri Maseko of Zimbabwe. By doing just that, he and his family turned a wasteland into an oasis, raised groundwater and well levels even in dry years, reduced flooding in wet years, and enhanced the fertility of the soils. This inspiring story will be shared along with the strategies used, and more importantly, the guiding principles that informed the choice, placement, and implementation of these strategies into a more integrated and productive system. These principles work in any climate experiencing a dry season or drought. And they help us see and act more holistically by asking us questions that direct our attention to important aspects of water and fertility systems we might otherwise overlook. Presenter: Brad Lancaster is a dynamic teacher, consultant, and designer of regenerative systems that sustainably enhance local resources and our global potential. He is the author of the award-winning, best-selling book series Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond.

Food forests mimic nature, are outstanding examples of earth stewardship, and arguably the most natural and sustainable food production method available. They are low-maintenance, produce a huge diversity of food and habitat, and help to regenerate and then maintain the land they are grown on.

“Agriculture is the biggest way that humans impact our landscape.”  By unwise agricultural practices, humanity has lost carbon from the land, into the atmosphere, and created drylands.  Put carbon back into the soil, by mulching, the water will come back.

Bring that carbon back down and put it in the ground.  We cannot achieve Drawdown without bio-sequestration.

“Bio-sequestration is using plants trees perennials and techniques of grazing and farming to capture carbon and store it in the sink of the soil.”  The 100 most substantive solutions to global warming.  We can reverse global warming.”

Storing carbon in soil:  is done by farmers and ranchers.  Soil can hold x more carbon than plants and air combined.  ability to store carbon in soil in a relatively short period of time.  
30 countries signed pledge to sequester carbon in soil, radical reduction in toxic pesticides, GMO’s and toxic pesticides.  India, US and China did not sign.  US pulled out of the Paris agreement.  Switching to renewable energies will not alter amount of carbon we have put into atmosphere.  Stopping greenhouse emissions, legacy load of carbon dioxide will be there.  Reducing emissions is not enough.  

Draw-down is the solution that makes sense for humanity.  Start to farm and grow our plants and trees in another way.
