On 15 April 2019, during Holy Week, a fire broke out in Paris’s Notre-Dame Cathedral. Just before 7pm, smoke appeared above the roof of the world-famous landmark. The fire had started in the attic underneath the spire during mass, but there were delays in discovering it, and then evacuating the building.

Flames quickly spread through the “Forest”, the 13th-century timber framework that supported the roof. An hour later, the lead spire crashed through the ceiling before the eyes of appalled Parisians and tourists. The fire department announced the entire structure could be lost. Firefighters climbed the north tower, appearing as tiny shadows silhouetted against the flames as they risked their lives to stop its collapse, which would have brought down the entire building. Throughout the night, believers stood vigil before their burning house of worship. The next day, one of the loveliest churches in Europe was still standing, barely, a burnt-out carcass with a gaping roof.

The fire at Our Lady of Paris shook people worldwide. The 850-year-old gothic masterpiece was the most-visited monument in the world. Many had personal memories of the cathedral that inspired Victor Hugo’s romantic bestseller, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. For the French, it is a core part of the country’s national identity. Roads signs give the distance to “Paris-Notre Dame”. Key historic events are marked there, as when General de Gaulle entered Notre Dame under sniper fire to celebrate the end of the city’s Nazi occupation in 1944.

While the fire was still raging, President Macron addressed the nation, promising to rebuild the cathedral, making it “more beautiful than before.” Donations were pledged for Notre Dame’s restoration, most prominently by France’s two richest businessmen. No terrorist group claimed responsibility for the fire, and investigators quickly claimed it wasn’t arson.
Those who worked in Notre Dame share their stories of the fateful night and the sense of loss they now feel. These include the priest who was celebrating mass, Notre-Dame Cathedral’s organist, Johann Vexo, and a security guard for whom intercultural romance blossomed in the comforting embrace of Our Lady’s walls.
RTD listens to those who served in the cathedral, those involved in restoration work as well as critics. So, was the Notre Dame fire really an accident? If so, why is it such a painful wound for France?

THE PROFIT MOTIVE

Ruthless competition based on narrow-minded self-interest is ultimately destructive of even those things which it seeks to maintain. Exclusive and self-serving profit motivation is incompatible with Christian ideals -- much more incompatible with the teachings of Jesus.

But the profit motive must not be suddenly destroyed or removed; it keeps many otherwise slothful mortals hard at work.   ^71:6.3 The profit motive of economic activities is altogether base and wholly unworthy of an advanced order of society; nevertheless, it is an indispensable factor throughout the earlier phases of civilization. Profit motivation must not be taken away from men until they have firmly possessed themselves of superior types of nonprofit motives for economic striving and social serving -- the transcendent urges of superlative wisdom, intriguing brotherhood, and excellency of spiritual attainment.

DISCOVERY: The Meteor Blast That Destroyed the Biblical Sodom | Ancient Architects

Scientists have discovered evidence of a low-altitude meteor explosion that took place north of the Dead Sea around 3,700 years ago. A team have excavated the Bronze Age city of Tall El-Hammam for the past 13 years and they discovered that the mud-brick walls of nearly all structures suddenly disappeared, leaving only stone foundations.

The experts have looked at all the evidence and have identified this ancient city of Tall El-Hamman as the Biblical Sodom of the Old Testament and now it's looks like we've discovered the event that caused the catastrophe. Watch the video to learn more about this news story.

Russia's Far Eastern Federal District covers 41 percent of the country's territory but is home to a mere six percent of its population. And the region is losing an average of 17,000 inhabitants a year. In order to stem this rural exodus, but also to exploit this vast territory, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made developing the Far East a priority. FRANCE 24's Elena Volochine reports.

Mallence Bart-Williams was born in Cologne, Germany. She is a Sierra Leonean writer and filmmaker and a German fashion designer. She pursued her studies in economics and finance in Paris, Singapore, and Great Britain. Today she lives across the globe, produces an all-natural cosmetics line in Hong Kong, and is the founder and creative director of the Freetown-based creative collective FOLORUNSHO, a ‘SHARITY’ that she initiated with street kids in Sierra Leone.

Due to her German-Sierra Leonean roots she perceives herself as a bridge connecting two vastly different worlds. Her diverse background enables her to see creative solutions to common problems. Within their three years of operation, her collective has taken homeless children off the streets and into school, developed a sneaker and clothing collection, published a book and documentary of their story, and has held fine art exhibitions. Through her work with FOLORUNSHO she connects cultural contrast, enabling people to share ideas, take action, and get results.

When Hollywood marketing executive Scott Neeson embarked on a sabbatical between jobs in 2003, he couldn’t have imagined how it would change his life. On a trip to Phnom Penh, Scott saw hundreds of children and their families living and working on the Steung Meanchey garbage dump, one of the most toxic environments imaginable. It was a moment that changed his life.

Scott had a 26-year career in the film business, including tenure as President of 20th Century Fox International. Scott thought he had it all – a powerful role in the film industry, celebrity friends, a big house, fancy cars and a boat.

But in 2003, Scott’s view on life changed completely when he found himself looking out across the Steung Meanchey garbage dump at hundreds of children scavenging through garbage.

Soon after, Scott made the decision to resign from his job, sell all of his possessions and focus his energy and passion into the Cambodian Children’s Fund. Twelve years later and Scott’s journey still captivates, inspires and bewilders people from all over the world.

China's path to global power leads through the legendary trade road. Our authors travel west on two separate paths: One team follows the sea route, along which China is expanding its support bases, while the other follows the ancient Silk Road through Central Asia. Their journey takes them through stunning landscapes and to magical places with ancient caravanserais, where the lore of the old Silk Road lives on. At the same time, they observe China’s overwhelming new influence in immense construction sites and shipping hubs. People everywhere are hoping the new trade will bring them and their children work and prosperity, just as the old Silk Road did hundreds of years ago. But others fear that a future dominated by China will bring them no good at all. "Clean water, the mountains and nature are much more important than the money they give us," the filmmakers learn in Kyrgyzstan. Chinese investment has not only bestowed the country with better roads, power lines and railway lines, but also with environmental pollution, corruption and crippling debt. Oman is another stop on the line, where Beijing has taken over large parts of a new Special Economic Zone in the desert city of Duqm. You can still see traditional Arab dhows in the old harbor at Sur, but they no longer have a place in today’s international trade. Instead, the horizon is dotted with huge container ships, many of them flying the Chinese flag. Meanwhile, the French port city of Marseille is aiming to become the New Silk Road’s European bridgehead. A small container village in the hills above the city is the first step. Cheap textiles from the Far East are delivered here to the "Marseille International Fashion Center”. MIF 68 for short - 68 is considered a lucky number in China - is geared towards distributing China’s products throughout Europe. The two-part documentary shows the breathtaking dimensions of this gigantic project - one where, it would seem, no stone will be left unturned.

The old Silk Road is a legend, whereas the New Silk Road is a real megaproject. China wants to reconnect the world though a network of roads, railways, ports and airports between Asia and Europe. A team of reporters travels by sea and land along the New Silk Road and shows how China, with the largest investment program in history, is expanding its influence worldwide. Their journey begins in Shenzhen on the Pearl River Delta. This is where China's legendary rise to an economic superpower began 40 years ago. The private market economy experiment unleashed forces that allowed Shenzhen to grow into a mega-metropolis. 

The team takes a container ship towards Southeast Asia. Its first stop is the port city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia. A joke is making the rounds there these days: you can now travel to China without a passport and without leaving your own country. Sihanoukville is now almost part of China itself! The Chinese have financed practically everything built here in the recent past: the extension of the port, new roads, bridges and factories. Many Cambodians are unhappy and feel like losers in the boom. Rising prices and rents are making the poor even poorer. But for land and house owners, on the other hand, it’s a bonanza.
In Myanmar, resistance is already growing. Locals in Kachin have successfully blocked a new dam project, asking how the Chinese could produce energy for their own country whilst leaving the locals themselves without electricity? The Myanmar government pulled the emergency brake and the huge Chinese dam project did not get beyond the first concrete piers in the river. 
The Karakorum Highway from Kashgar in China across the Roof of the World to Islamabad in Pakistan is one of the most difficult and dangerous roads in this breathtaking mountain world. Once the road is finished, it often disintegrates again, and rock falls and landslides block the highway as if the Karakorum Mountains are trying to deny China strategic access to the Arabian Sea. The first part of the report ends in Islamabad.
