Brent St.Denis Writes about Buffy

She is an indigenous woman born in the province of Saskatchewan, in the Canadian prairies. She was adopted out at a young age to a family in Massachusetts. Her famous anti-war song Universal Soldier is still relevant today as are Up Where We Belong and many others.

Derek sent me a wonderful photo of her at a UBLA gathering taken many decades ago.

He’s five foot two and he’s six foot four

These were the height parameters for soldiers in 1961

He fights with missiles and with spears

In both the future and the past, soldiers are soldiers: only the equipment varies

He’s all of 31 and he’s only 17

Age parameters during the 1960s

He’s been a soldier for a thousand years

This is not some new high tech phenomenon

He’s a Catholic, a Hindu, an atheist a Jain,
A Buddhist, and a Baptist and a Jew

Soldiers are found even among people who are “religious” and are not confined to just one religion

And he knows he shouldn’t kill and he knows he always will

Even though his religion forbids it, he chooses to be a killer

Kill you for me, my friend, and me for you

Whichever side he’s on, it’s still absurd

He’s fighting for Canada. He’s fighting for France. He’s fighting for the USA
and he’s fighting for the Russians and he’s fighting for Japan

He’s not just from some far away enemy country but from “our” country too

And he thinks he’ll put an end to war this way

He hasn’t thought it through from a logical, long range point of view

He’s fighting for democracy, he’s fighting for the Reds

He’s on “our side” as well as “their side”

He’s says it’s for the peace of all

He’s believes in the absurdity of violence as an act of peace

He’s the one who must decide who’s to live and who’s to die

He has a responsibility he’s been trained to overlook

And he never sees the writing on the wall

He learns nothing from history so can’t predict obvious outcomes of repeating it

But without him how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau

Human beings allow other human beings to commit genocide

Without him Caesar would have stood alone.

We can’t blame just the leaders

He’s the one who gives his body as a weapon to a war

Each individual has a choice

And without him all this killing can’t go on

No individual soldiers = no war

He’s the universal soldier and he is really is to blame

Some responsibility is upon each soldier

But his orders come from far away no more

The Nazis claimed they were innocent because their orders came from” far away” superiors 
but that’s not true here and now in our modern democracies

They come from him and you and me

We are each responsible – civilians, mothers and sweethearts – so long as we tolerate it

and Brothers, can’t you see this is not the way to put an end to war?

This last line is put not as scolding someone else but as a question to someone you love. 

Note that the music ends on an unresolved chord.

Vietnam soldier’s grafitti, mis-identified by Smithsonian Magazine as a “mystery poem”, turns out actually to be from Buffy Sainte-Marie’s song Universal Soldier.

In 1967, a young G.I. was lying on his bunk on a troop carrier headed to Vietnam. On the canvas bottom of the bunk above him, he carefully wrote a few lines of free verse in Morse code. That piece of canvas was donated along with a few others to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where a historian was studying wartime graffiti.

New stamp honours renowned singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie

uffy Sainte-Marie has one of the music industry’s most distinctive and recognizable voices. For nearly 60 years, the internationally renowned singer-songwriter has used it as a powerful way to speak out against injustice and help foster change.

Sainte-Marie is believed to have been born on February 20, 1941, on the Piapot First Nation in southeastern Saskatchewan’s Qu’Appelle Valley. Raised by adoptive parents in New England and subjected to racism and abuse when she was young, she turned to music “just for the joy of it.”

“I’m musically dyslexic and unable to learn notation, but from the age of three I’ve made music naturally at home, by ear, without teachers … no matter who insisted that I couldn’t,” she says. “I was also told I couldn’t be an Indigenous person because they were all vanished. Knowing that sometimes the world is wrong and you’re right is a tremendous advantage in understanding it.”

Graduating college in the early 1960s, she began playing at coffee houses and folk festivals, quickly distinguishing herself with her vibrato vocals, emotional delivery and fearless lyrics. Intensely passionate about her craft and convictions, she became an outspoken activist for Indigenous rights and an unwavering voice for the oppressed.

Some 20 years after the release of her first album It’s My Way! (1964), which contained the popular anti-war anthem “Universal Soldier”, she found out that her songs had been banned from airplay on American radio stations by the Johnson and Nixon administrations.

“There was nothing I could do about it when I did find out,” she says. “The reality: I just kept on writing, painting, making music – even though I was getting nowhere in showbiz, because that’s what I love to do anyway. I’m an artist.”

Sainte-Marie’s work – from hit love songs such as “Until It’s Time for You to Go”, “Up Where We Belong” and “Still This Love Goes On” to serious protest songs like “Universal Soldier”, “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone”, “The War Racket” and “No No Keshagesh” –has constantly evolved, blending and transcending genres. Although she says she’s influenced by all music, she admits to being crazy about Tchaikovsky and Little Richard and identifying closely with the emotionally unbridled vocals of Edith Piaf and Carmen Amaya.

“Those let ‘er rip styles feel very natural to me. Singing powwow is nothing like the honey-and-lemon sing-your-scales approach of ‘official’ music. We sing all night, no problem,” she says. “I’ve also listened to a lot of old Delta blues men tell their stories. That’s what I like, no matter where or when it comes from. Real emotion, unique entertainment.”

Over the years, Sainte-Marie has channelled her boundless energy and creativity into more than just her music. For a number of seasons, she shared her warmth and wisdom with millions of children as a regular on Sesame Street. She is also a talented multi-media artist whose deeply meaningful and visually arresting works hang in galleries across Canada and the United States.

“It’s just another kind of fun: same brain, different tools. Believe it or not, I’m not some purposeful scholar making art with a goal in mind. I’m like a kid: I’m playing with colour, sound, light, melody, line, contrast, harmony, reflection, rhythm, repetition. All the elements of basic design,” she explains. “I’d do the same thing playing in the sand at the beach.”

This same attitude is also reflected in Sainte-Marie’s openness to using innovative technologies  of the day to create her art. In 1969 she released the world’s first quadraphonic vocal album,  Illuminations, which also marked the beginning of her experimentation with electronic sounds. In 1984, she began creating her digital fine art collection using the earliest version of MacPaint on the first Macintosh computer. In 1991, she recorded the first-ever album delivered using the internet: Coincidence and Likely Stories.

Still performing at age 80, Sainte-Marie’s talent, unique artistic vision and extraordinary bravery in the face of adversity have won her a passionate and loyal following across the country and around the world. With more than 20 albums to her name, she has seen her music covered by hundreds of artists – including Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand and Cher.

Sainte-Marie has received many accolades, including appointment as a Companion of the Order of Canada, multiple JUNO and other awards – among them, an Academy Award for co-writing the hit ballad “Up Where We Belong” for the movie An Officer and a Gentleman – and, now, her own commemorative stamp. 

Although she is honoured by such recognition, she confesses that the achievements that mean the most to her are her educational and philanthropic efforts. She is particularly proud of seeing two of her early scholarship recipients go on to become the presidents of tribal colleges. And, she hopes that her Cradleboard Teaching Project – which has developed a curriculum that teaches core subjects such as science, history and geography through Indigenous eyes – will be embraced in Canada, as it has been in parts of the United States.

“It’s like trying to gather water in a lace curtain. Our histories, the health of our communities and our capacities to survive the present onslaught of challenges have all been disjointed, like chicken parts rendered for the fryer,” she says. “We each deal with it in our own ways, and for me, scholarship, creativity and public outreach is the path for both my gift to others and my way of healing myself from life’s little bruises.”

Her advice to up-and-coming Indigenous artists?

“… you can develop endlessly, continually challenged by new issues but also refreshed by new creativity, knowing that the world may be naive about something to which you have the key,”

The world’s insect population has declined by three quarters in the last 30 years and many species have become extinct. And it's all man's fault. This documentary looks at the dramatic consequences of this hitherto unrecognized catastrophe.

The results of long-term monitoring published in 2017 have confirmed that as much as 75 percent of the world’s insect population has disappeared in the last 30 years. The extent of species extinction is so vast that many researchers fear that it will knock the entire natural cycle of life out of balance. Not only the decline of the bee population but mass insect mortality as a whole will have devastating consequences for all the Earth’s inhabitants. Top scientists from around the globe are warning that the developments are much more widespread and serious than anyone had realized. Many animals feed on insects. Insects also help to convert dead tissue into nutrient-rich soil. In addition, they even regulate each other. Species that humans see as pests are often the preferred prey of useful predators. But massive human intervention has thrown the functioning balance in the insect world out of whack. Chemical poisons, the progressive sealing of soils and the widespread use of fertilizers are affecting the world's most species-rich animal class. This documentary looks at current studies and explains what is going wrong and where urgent action is needed. There's still some hope: although many species have been irrevocably lost, mass extinction in the insect kingdom could still be stopped - but only if humans finally begin to act against it. And we're running out of time.

Arctic sea ice has not only been shrinking in surface area in recent years, it’s becoming younger and thinner as well. In this animation, where the ice cover almost looks gelatinous as it pulses through the seasons, cryospheric scientist Dr. Walt Meier of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center describes how the sea ice has undergone fundamental changes during the era of satellite measurements.

Of the ten major divisions of Orvonton, eight have been roughly identified by Urantian astronomers. The other two are difficult of separate recognition because you are obliged to view these phenomena from the inside. If you could look upon the superuniverse of Orvonton from a position far-distant in space, you would immediately recognize the ten major sectors of the seventh galaxy.

  ^15:3.5 The rotational center of your minor sector is situated far away in the enormous and dense star cloud of Sagittarius, around which your local universe and its associated creations all move, and from opposite sides of the vast Sagittarius subgalactic system you may observe two great streams of star clouds emerging in stupendous stellar coils.

  ^15:3.6 The nucleus of the physical system to which your sun and its associated planets belong is the center of the onetime Andronover nebula. This former spiral nebula was slightly distorted by the gravity disruptions associated with the events which were attendant upon the birth of your solar system, and which were occasioned by the near approach of a large neighboring nebula. This near collision changed Andronover into a somewhat globular aggregation but did not wholly destroy the two-way procession of the suns and their associated physical groups. Your solar system now occupies a fairly central position in one of the arms of this distorted spiral, situated about halfway from the center out towards the edge of the star stream.

  ^15:3.7 The Sagittarius sector and all other sectors and divisions of Orvonton are in rotation around Uversa, and some of the confusion of Urantian star observers arises out of the illusions and relative distortions produced by the following multiple revolutionary movements:

1. The revolution of Urantia around its sun.

2. The circuit of your solar system about the nucleus of the former Andronover nebula.

3. The rotation of the Andronover stellar family and the associated clusters about the composite rotation-gravity center of the star cloud of Nebadon.

4. The swing of the local star cloud of Nebadon and its associated creations around the Sagittarius center of their minor sector.

5. The rotation of the one hundred minor sectors, including Sagittarius, about their major sector.

6. The whirl of the ten major sectors, the so-called star drifts, about the Uversa headquarters of Orvonton.

7. The movement of Orvonton and six associated superuniverses around Paradise and Havona, the counterclockwise processional of the superuniverse space level.

  ^15:3.8 These multiple motions are of several orders: The space paths of your planet and your solar system are genetic, inherent in origin. The absolute counterclockwise motion of Orvonton is also genetic, inherent in the architectural plans of the master universe. But the intervening motions are of composite origin, being derived in part from the constitutive segmentation of matter-energy into the superuniverses and in part produced by the intelligent and purposeful action of the Paradise force organizers.

  ^15:3.9 The local universes are in closer proximity as they approach Havona; the circuits are greater in number, and there is increased superimposition, layer upon layer. But farther out from the eternal center there are fewer and fewer systems, layers, circuits, and universes.

"Planet Earth" is a 2006 television series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. After I have watched all eleven episodes, I tried to compress all the beautiful images in one video. That's how I come up with this marvelous 13 minutes. If you really like this I suggest you to watch the hole documentary because at the end of each fifty-minute episode, a ten-minute featurette takes a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of filming the series.
